Which books would you recommend for knowing more about 19th century England?
I was thinking of writing a story set in 19th century England. It would be a great help if someone could recommend books/ online resources which describes the customs, lifestyle, social structure, fashion, architecture etc.of this period.
bung 19c Britain into google, loads of stuff comes up. Read Dickens, get old copies of the Illustrated London News, available on eBay, likewise, old copies of the Strand Magazine, read early works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Go to your Library and look at the section dealing with society in Victorian Britain. You need to turn on your brain if you want to write.
You've got to read Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species." Read that, then read reactions to Darwin's work. It was a major point in 19th century England.
