Tell me what you think. Is Javert from Victor Hugo's Les Miserables a good guy or a bad guy? Why?
I know what I think, but I want to see what others come up with. This question can easily be a hub length answer.
Great question regarding a very complex character, though a difficult one to answer in such black and white terms. I perceive Javert as a man with a rigid morality almost completely lacking in compassion, such that it ultimately proved soul-destroying. He saw things so black and white that the paradox of the human condition, in which we are all carnally influenced though equally yearning for spiritual peace, was as foreign to his thinking as water flowing up hill. The evil represented by his character is that of “unrighteous judgement” in which a man’s verdict of another is based not on believing and hoping the best but only on seeing the worst. The saddest part of his story, however, is that even when his heartlessness finally dawned on him, he felt incapable of accepting the truth of it.
~We must learn to regard people less in light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer ~(Dietrich Bonhoeffer)
Javert was the police inspector and I did not think he was that complex, but I found him more of a fatalist, extremely dedicated to any cause, accepting whatever comes his way, but with very little personal conscience, and extremely suspicious. He was the one who was so wretched in the story even more so than the mayor or ValJean himself. I believe that was Victor Hugo's (author) goal to show people to be less suspicious of everyone. Have a good day.
Good answers, gentlemen. Thank you.
I wish Hubpages would accept shorter answers. They won't, so I'm typing this nonsense.

I just saw Les Miserables this weekend and I about curious about opinions on Javert. I did not really know the story going into the film, but from what I gathered, I was really meant to "hate" Javert (the character, not Russell Crowe's adaptation.)I did not hate him. In fact,...

What did everyone think of the 2013 movie version of Les Miserables starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway? I'd like to hear your opinion. And let me know what your favorite part of the film was.

Do you think doing too much for a guy in a relationship, turns him off?A friend told me that doing too much for a guy, his laundry, cooking, shopping, especially in a new relationship, can turn a guy off. She said the more he does for himself makes him feel better. Do you agree?
