Do you feel that writing poetry improves your writing skills in other genres? Why?
Writing poems can and does strengthen your ability to use imagery in your writing. Poetry is emotion expressed in just a few words, the ability to paint mental pictures. Everyone should write poems, not just writers.
I would say yes, not professing to be any type of expert on the topic.
When writing poetry, don't you seek out apt words to suit the verse, words that you wouldn't normally use in general. You would then have new words in your vocabulary that could be used within other genres.
Get that poetry rolling!!
