Although it's been over a decade since I've read anything by her, I'd have to say Agatha Christie. Not only was she a very prolific writer, but even after reading hundreds of her books I still could rarely predict the outcome whenever I read one of her mysteries. She does it simple, and she does it well. No vampires, aliens, time traveling or bizarre clones, just clever culprits and resourceful sleuths.
Martha Grimes hands down for me. Her books are a step above the "cozy" mystery novels but not too graphic and gory.
As a kid, my favorite mystery writer was Carolyn Keene - pseudonym of ghostwriters of famous detective mystery series - Nancy Drew. I enjoyed the twists and suspicion they weaved till the end in the Nancy Drew series!

Agatha Christie remains my number one favorite - she is the first mystery writer I ever read, when I was 14 years old or so. And her play The Mousetrap was the first play I ever saw, too.Other favorite authors are ... Elizabeth Peters, Charlotte Macleod and Simon Brett.
