Can you recommend a good author from Eastern Europe?

Preferably one that has been translated into English!

Ivo Andric - 'The Bridge on the Drina'. An exceptional book, but you might want to brush up a tiny bit on the complicated world of Balkan history first (wikipedia should suffice). It's kind of an autobiography of a bridge, but in a much more interesting way. I've had Mesa Selimovic's 'Death and the Dervish' on my reading list for months, but I haven't got round to it yet...

Just a couple of suggestions. I feel like there should be a Slovene in there - perhaps Ivan Cankar - I think 'Martin Kacur: the Biography of an Idealist' is still in print.

I just thought of another, if you want something avant garde, Milorad Pavic's 'the Dictionary of the Khazars', a novel in the form of an encyclopedia.
