What graphic novel should I read?

What graphic novel would you suggest for someone who wants a challenge, but has never read a graphic novel before?

I'd say Watchmen, but maybe that's a bit of a big one for a first novel!  The Dark Knight Returns is great too.

Watchmen and The Dark Knight is on my list. I didn't like the Watchmen film very much but I hear the novel is better.

Any of those Marvel Collections are good primers for later stuff; also some stuff like Ultimate X-Men: The Ultimate Collection is a cool action packed modern intro to the X-Universe, but it's hard to figure out as there are a million X-Titles. Watchmen is excellent, at some point you need to read it, but it's not as "action packed" as you'd expect, so it may be a better second or 3rd.

X-Men are probably my favourite Marvel dudes. Thanks.

God Loves, Man Kills would be a great place to start.

    Watchmen, of course.
And V for Vendetta. Both are written by Alan Moore, and are both splendid, dark tales that make you think.
