I have had a regular business column for a year now in our local newspaper. It is a bit different writing a  column as opposed to a hub or a blog. The research and the effort required in writing, either of them, is very similar but writing with a  deadline adds a whole different dimension. I enjoy the total process of research and writing although I admit adding a deadline to the task was a bit intimidating. I found, for me, the best way to deal with it was to write on a schedule. The first few pieces were a bit nerve wracking but after forcing myself to stick to that schedule I found writing the column much more enjoyable and fun. I ,now,  look forward to each one without any worry about a deadline.

No, I have written letters and had them published with the local county newspaper.  However,  all of  the UK's local, town, papers seem to be freebies and the publishers do not want to know about paying, believing that we should all write for the thrill of having our name in print.  I believe that, 'no man but a blockhead wrote for anything but money', andf that, if a company can afford to produce a newspaper, it can afford to pay for content.  When I used to write and have articles published, it was with glossy mags, or weekly newspaper type mags.

Yes but not under contract. I have had several editorial articles published but not as a paid position.

Yes!   I've had the odd humorous article published in local newspapers here in Canada and in Scotland, but that was before the Internet took over.

Yes i have written and published editorials in a weekly paper. It wasn't difficult, but it was hard work because when you write an editorial, you are giving an opinion on news events that took place in the country that week. Select a theme and write

    flashmakeit,

Yes. I used to work for a few different newspapers. I wrote straight news, features, and business reviews. It was fun, but it is true that it's a lot different working with a deadline as someone else mentioned. HP's allows you to sit down when you feel like it and write about whatever you want. It's great.

Usually, writing for newspapers require an official certificate that is related to creative writing, mass communications or journalism. If you don't have any, you are required to substantiate your writing prowess with a proven track record of your successfully published writing content, be it online or in print. Because of the need to reduce costs, newspaper companies are unwilling to pay charlatans or amateurs.

I had submitted my articles to five local newspapers lately, and all of them were declined because they do not meet their expectations. They didn't give any elaboration too, so it is hard to pinpoint exactly what is wrong with my articles.

Well, getting published requires a bit of luck. And the failure to getting published really demotivate anyone because there are other more pressing concerns, i.e. earning a living. Anyone in the right mind will not quit their day job to dedicate their time into writing only.
