I think he was dark, brilliant, and deeply sad at times. He also had a wild sense of humor. When I was writing a paper about him for a college lit class, I came across an essay written by one of his colleagues. They were having a seance and he slipped away from the table while everyone had their eyes closed and draped a sheet over his head. Then he stood in the shadows of the candle-lit room and began chasing them around the room howling when they opened their eyes and freaked out from seeing a "ghost" in the room.
