The transitive and intransitive constructs of the roots Live and Survive defy clear definition. This is an ever increasing problem in English because of weak noun and verb structure and poor modern education.
Consider both words in a given situation and compare them. Survival is most often used when something traumatic or dangerous is endured or overcome.
Surviving - having a roof over your head, enough food to eat, no one dying, clothed, quality is irrelevant
Living - grateful and joyful, even if in the same material conditions or better
