Suggestions for online work sites ( for fairly new writers)

Can you suggest online sites for writers who want to begin building their online writing portfolio?  Which sites that you applied to immediately got you online writing jobs?  What worked and what didn't work?  Are there any sites you'd stay away from?

      Do you mean:

-Writing sites like Hubpages where you earn passively for the life of the article?
-Sites where you receive up front payment and lose all rights to your work?

I would stay away from VWorker, if I were you.  That site is more for programmers and I know several writers that have not been paid for work that they did.  I've heard good things about Odesk, but have never tried it.  Also, you might check listings on Craigslist.

You can try Elance.com. also like Writer Fox said, Odesk is another site. Guru.com is also one.
