I think the best way to start a veggie garden is by choosing a sunny plot, usually in the spring for summer harvest. Add compost to your soil and dig to loosen. Start with seedlings from the nursery with tomatoes, beans, herbs, cukes, squashes, maybe Fall harvest pumpkins. Corn too if you've a lot of room for rows. (Check out the Native American 3 sisters planting style). In cooler months grow lettuce, cabbages, broccoli, and peas from seed starts and directly plant seeds for carrots, radishes, parsnips, and beets. Once you get confident, you can experiment with more things. Pots, rows, or raised beds are all good ways to start.
