the best way to do it is to use manufactured hardwood. it is either glued together or snapped together and it just sits on the slab with an underlay separating it .it's known as floating hardwood floor. Bruce Flooring is one of the makers.
I've used manufactured wood floors in one of my home renovation projects and it's worked very well. There are hundred year old original wood floors beneath that we wanted to protect from kids strollers etc for a couple years til they grew up. Exactly as nightwor4 said, has worked great. Install was easy, relatively inexpensive. I think on slab they should work well too.
