I myself have not had a flower garden (yet), but my girlfriend seen your question as I scrolled down the page and said "reply and tell her I had gnomes!".
Although I've yet had a place or time for a flower garden, if I had one I think it would be awesome to have it set up with a walk-way with corners and flowers surrounding different types of fantasy style statues.
Absolutely! Anything goes......not tacky.......I use small items and build a theme around them. Old stuff, kids stuff, whatever. I have a small little boy statue, and I planted many different things around him along with a small path. I get more compliments on that little area than my whole garden.
