How Does a Wood Burning Stove Work?
Multi fuel and woodburner stoves pull a flame and helps the fuel to glow via the chimney, but how does this work?
As far as I know it works by drawing air through an adjustable vent(s) which regulates the intensity of the flames.
jasmith1 is not far wrong, but the adjustable vents actually regulate the amount of oxygen being drawn into the stove and the flow of gases produced flowing out, allowing the fuel to 'second burn' and therefore increasing efficiency.
One vent allows oxygen into the stove, which is usually opened fully only to allow the stove pipe to get hot, causing the unwanted gases to be drawn up into the chimney and the other vent controls how quickly those gases are released.
By tuning the two, the burn is much more efficient, enabling the stove to produce the maximum amount of heat from the wood, whilst cutting down on the amount of CO2 and other impurities released into the atmosphere.
