How can we take a budget-friendly honeymoon?

I'm getting married next summer! We are having a French-themed wedding and would like to take a honeymoon to France for a few weeks during July–August 2013. I would love to visit Monaco, and both of us wanted to do some extra traveling—maybe to Spain, Italy, and/or Germany, or at least throughout France itself.  However, we would like to do so on a budget.  Does anyone have any tips?

Look into 'youth hostels'; they are all over Europe. You can buy a pass that allows you to visit the entire bunch and a night per person is far cheaper than a motel. The problem would be that you are newlyweds, and most hostels have a women's dorm and a men's dorm. But you certainly could find out of the way places in nature to um...express yourselves.

Haha, thanks krillco!  Good idea.  I'll look into it.

Yikes, Monaco is expensive to stay in, but nearby France, so best bet is to do a day trip there, or just stop while passing through.  There is a MacDonalds in Monaco with its famous cheap food, lol or you could buy makings for a sandwich and some fresh fruit in one of the supermarkets.  But France itself CAN be done on a budget.  The Tourism folks there regulate campgrounds, for example, and give out stars like they do for hotels.  You can stay on farms, in apartments, right on the grounds of a winery off-season, etc., for pretty reasonable cost.  Traveling France this way is always a way to really get to know the country and the people and the famous FRENCH CUISINE!  Steer away from Paris and the other tourist hot spots and do your research on the Internet (go on some forums and make some friends there who have been, or who live in, France).  Google "cheap stays in France".  All the best!

Great suggestions!  I would love to stay in a flat or on a farm, seems like either would be a pretty authentic experience.  And maybe we will cut our Monaco visit short ... maybe just a night.

I have been to France, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Russia to name a few... overall about 12 countries. What you are talking about can be close to impossible, however do not let that discourage you.  You might be better off with with a rental car depending on where you want to go or getting from place to place via train can work to your advantage.  Also there are decent hotel rooms further away from the common "tourist" places where the prices drop steeply.  You also might want to make your own food on the go.
