Can informative hubs compete with product-promoting hubs in terms of revenue?
Is it possible to earn decent money with mostly informative hubs on niche and semi-popular topics, rather than product-promoting hubs?
Well, you asked two questions there.
To the first one, I'm not sure as I don't have a point of reference to compare against.
For the second one, I'd daresay it's possible. I think it's more about making quality hubs, which has the effect of generating traffic. More traffic equals more chances of users seeing an ad they like and clicking on it. More of your Adsense ads getting clicked on = more $$$.
The type of hub hardly matters when it comes to earning, rather the quality of hub does. If your hub is a good one with tonnes of information it will certainly make you money.
My answer is probably. I think that most informative hubs are generally better written with helpful advice. If done correctly, an informative hub will produce long term results and higher search engine rankings versus a hub scattered with affiliate links and quick sells.
Not to mention if the correct phrase is used to attract visitors, the hub can produce a good amount of money thru adsense versus affilate sales.

I didn't think this was allowed and it is rather annoying spamming a link to one article every couple hours.

While I'm being a policeman, I can't help noticing that there's a lot of self-promotion that goes on in the forums. Especially the "other topics" forums, where quite often you'll find posts with not much more than the link to the person's Hub.Surely the forums are places to discuss...
