We get paid by affiliate programs we register for, the main ones are, Adsense, eBay, kontera and Amazon, but you are free to advertise any other affiliate program you find profitable.
Hubpages doesn't pay you directly. You'll need to sign up iwth affiliate programs like Amazon.com and Google Adsense. You can get paid in different methods with each of those programs. Amazon will do direct deposit, check, or gift card; I think that Google pays by check or direct deposit. Depending on where you live, your method of payment may be different.
Like pedrog said, you can sign up for different affiliate programs outside of those as well. You can promote the same affiliate programs on other web sites also.

I thought my UK affiliate ID was working fine with HP as long as I chose amazon.com based products - seems I was very wrong! You do not get credited with any sales. If you only have a UK affiliate code, you need to apply to amazon.com for another one, which I have just done.
