My husband and I got out of £18k of debt in a year by consolidating everything so the actual monthly payment was low and then used all our existing savings, plus saved most of our income each month to put towards paying it off. When we had a lump big enough we paid it all in one go. The key was that we wanted to get out of debt so we could start saving afresh for a house- we had an important goal in mind and worked towards it as quickly as we could.
