For NY residents...UPromise offers a credit card that as points are accumulated they automatically pay down Sallie Mae loans at the end of the quarter.  If you pay off your balance at the end of the month, it's a nice way to contribute to principal rather than accumulating AMEX points to get stuff you don't need.

Very interesting! I use Upromise but don't have the credit card.  I'll have to see if this is available in MA.

    Hi ElleBee,

I know that you can get forgiveness after paying on your loans for ten years if you work in certain communities such as very rural and on reservations, etc.  I am following this question in hopes of learning something too my loans are astronomical and I am not even working.  I also know about Upromise, and I signed up but so far I haven't earned anything.  How do you spend money when you are broke?

    Good luck!

    Sondra

I've been using Upromise for awile - keep in mind that you can ask other people to sign up to save for you too! My grandparents, parents and aunt all have cards registered to help me save. Not a lot ($295 and I've been registered there since 2002...)

Thanks for the suggestion but I am not interested in using a loan to pay off a loan. I want to get rid of debts not change them.

Join the military.  Or if you're unemployed, you can defer payments further.

I am employed, but my incme is low enough to defer payments on some of my loans, unfortunately not all (of my) loans are eligible for this option.
