How much would it cost to fight a civil case in court?

Where would you spend your money?

That depends greatly on the type of case.  For personal injury litigation the attorney's usually work on a contingency basis.  However if you were filing suit for something like a hostile work environment, you would likely need a retainer.  That would depend on the Attorney.  If you are the one a suit is being filed against, the lawyers hourly rate is what you need to be concerned with.  That also depends on the type of case, and the region of the country.  Any decent lawyer in the NY area is a minimum of 400 per hour.  And that is the low end.  Plus you have to pay the hourly rate for is staff and the work they do.

A trial is known among lawyers as a "bonfire of cash." you can get your day in small claims court but once you enter the regular system be prepared to spend significant money. Obviously I can't answer the question precisely unless I knew the facts and the amounts involved, but suffice it to say it will cost big time. And don't blame the lawyers. It is often the litigants themselves who drag things out to bank breaking levels. As "landmarkwealth" points out, if the case is taken on a contingent fee basis, you are not at risk.
