This hub is the third of a series based on an essay that I wrote in the fall of 1991 both making a prediction of the outcome of the 1992 Presidential election, and the economic situation in the United States at that time. in this edition I propose a possible solution to our economic problems.

A funny thing happened today 10/14/2009. I saw a news report on Fox News about a new website promoting American made goods. I find it a little bit ironic that this is the exact idea I proposed in my 1991 essay to help solve our economic problems at that time.

But surely now that the Cold War is over our allies will see our plight, and realize they should do everything they can do to help. From U. S. News And World Report of November 18, 1991 let’s see what newly elected Prime Minister of Japan has to say on the topic. “But Japans outspoken new Prime Minister, Kiichi Miyazawa, appears to be taking a hard line on U. S. trade issues. He recently told foreign correspondents “America should buy more from Europe or boost it’s own competitiveness if it want to reduce its trade deficit with Japan.”"

So much for allied good will. LET US EAT CAKE!!!!!!!!!

I REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!

………………I REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

……………..LET THE AMERICANS EAT CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’LL REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

…………………………………………….I’LL REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We should not be surprised that our allies are not rushing forward to help us solve our economic problems. After all, their obligations are to their own people not to our people.

It is not, however in the self-interest of the World’s community to see The United State’s economy undergo a meltdown. Such an event would trigger a World economic winter, which would make the Great Depression look like a cakewalk.

Once again, the time has come for all Americans to unite in a common cause. We have always done so when the threat of a foreign military power caused us to fear for our survival as a nation, and we must now do so in the face of a clear and present danger to our social/ political/economic viability. To do so we must undergo an attitude adjustment.

An unintended consequence of the U. S. in the Global military arena during the Cold War is the willingness, the desire, and the expectation that Washington should, can, and will solve all of our problems. Maybe it should, maybe it can, and maybe it will, but the cure (with it’s unintended consequences) will be worse than the disease (the original problem). We must each be ready, willing, and able to help ourselves both individually, and collectively to maximize and ensure both the strength, and the effectiveness of our actions.

I endorse and accept Prime Minister Miyazawa’s challenge to us to boost our own competitiveness, and I know that we can accomplish the task. But along with forming new attitudes towards helping ourselves, we need to adjust our attitudes about the problems, which we face in order to do so. We Americans have been told by experts that our problems are deep rooted, and that they defy easy answers. Let’s examine some of the deep-rooted problems that the experts describe.

  1. Superior Japanese and European management techniques ensure their competitive advantage. HOGWASH!!!!!!! Once the competitive edge is gained it takes mismanagement to lose it.
  2. Americans are unwilling to make the capital investment needed to boost their competitiveness. DOUBLE HOGWASH !!!!!!!!!!! We have invested hundreds of billions of dollars towards new plant and equipment while at the same time making similar investments to protect our workers and our environment. Also during this time similar amounts have been invested to train new workers who have entered the job force because of increasing opportunity to do so. THERE HAVE BEEN AND REMAIN TO BE COSTS OF DOING BUSINESS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THAT EXIST NO WHERE ELSE ON EARTH!!!!! These new costs exist because we (through our elected officials) have decided that the benefits that we receive from these programs are worth the cost.
  3. Americans are lazy and non-productive. They have no commitment to excellence, and no desire to achieve. BULL S---T!!!!!!!!! Try telling that to General Norman Swartzkopf!! I doubt that even Saddam Hussein believes this crap anymore, and I’m certain his generals don’t.
  4. American made products just don’t have the quality of foreign made products. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!! Quality is not always an easily identifiable quantity. Many complex components both objective and subjective must be considered when one defines quality. I contend that the concept of quality of life in America deserves ample consideration by American consumers as they consider the purchase of goods and services.
  5. America’s industrial base is gone we must accept being a service based economy. OH YEAH SURE!!!!!!!!!! This will be so if we accept and allow it to be so. We must accept the gains in the service sector, but we also must regain our manufacturing base along with maintaining our vital agricultural sector. An increase in the manufacturing sector will create increased demand and therefore increased jobs in the service sector. The converse of this is not true.

If we choose to accept the pessimism of experts in defining our capabilities and our goals, then we are accepting that we are weak and helpless. I know that we are neither weak nor helpless. We are strong and vital, and each and every one of us has the capability to improve both our current economic position as well as our future economic prospects.

Experts describe the nature and overwhelming number of these problems in such a manner as to imply they defy solution. We are told that at best any solution will involve extreme pain. The result of such a description is to generate extreme fear, and that fear divides us into groups of me/you, us/them, and have/have not. Once we have bought into the expert’s analysis the resulting divisions paralyze us, and disable us from taking a united position of strength in our enlightened self-interest.

Do you believe any of the following statements?

The Earth is flat, and it is the center of the universe, and all creation revolves around it.

The slingshot/ bow and arrow/ catapult is the ultimate weapon.

There is no possibility that a rag-tag group of thugs from the American Colonies can defeat the might of The British Empire and gain independence.

Those horseless carriages will never be anything but toys of the rich.

Albert Einstein will never amount to anything. He is an undisciplined lazy dreamer and besides he isn’t too bright.

The preceding are all examples of expert opinion at some point in history. Had people of vision and courage not existed, if the undeniable truth of expert’s opinion had gone unchallenged at any point in history, then the progress of humanity would, to this day, remain frozen in time at that point. It did not happen then, and it SHALL not happen now!

Let us learn to use our fear to motivate us to act in a productive manner. Allowing it to paralyze and fractionalize us is counter-productive. Once we understand that our fear can be a powerful incentive towards our uniting in our common self-interest, then we have learned to turn a disease into a cure. Pessimists and cynics look at problems and see only their counter-productive aspects. Optimists look at problems and realize they also represent opportunities to accomplish worthwhile goals. Would you like to venture a guess as to which of the above are successful at solving problems?

So we are actually VERY STRONG!!! It is in our common self-interest to take very specific action to solve our economic and social problems. They won’t just go away! We cannot expect for anyone else in the world to solve them for us! We must unite in the common cause, and solve them ourselves! We must each take part in putting all Americans to work by increasing demand for American goods and services. WE CAN DO THIS!!!!!!! WE ARE ALL CONSUMERS OF GOOD AND SERVICES!!!!!! It is an old idea but it is an idea whose time has come. Understand that it is in your self-interest to become an ENLIGHTENED CONSUMER, and to PURCHASE AMERICAN MADE GOODS AND SERVICES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right now we are all part of the same special interest group and our ox has, and is being gored. The name of the special interest group to which we all have lifetime membership is called Citizen of The United States of America. Just as the decade of the 80’s is known as the decade of greed, let us cause the ensuing decades to be known as THE DECADES OF AMERICAN ENLIGHTENED SELF INTEREST!!!!!!!!!!

If we as American citizen actually believe the cost of the addition regulations such as OSHA, EPA, EEOC, and numerous others are actually worthwhile then we must vote with our wallets to affirm our beliefs.

WE’LL REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!!

……………WE’LL REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

………………………WE’LL REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

…………………………………………….WE’LL REMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ther is no doubt that the solution proposed of buying American back in 1991 is more difficult in 2009 but it still is not impossible. We all can do our part in the revitilization of our Nation.

The entire point of my essay was to find a solution that didn't depend on any government, or political action. As citizens we can buy American regardless of our political position and the resulting solution will benefit all Americans.

Tom, This is very interesting hub. I've enjoyed the series. I think its going to take a different administration to revitalize our Nation. We seem to be going the wrong direction in many areas.
