Why does the United States put flouride in its drinking water?

As far as I know, the U.S. is the only country that has not abandoned this practice, which was championed by Hitler as a form of mind-control to make the public more docile. It's also a clever method for getting rid of a byproduct of nuclear waste. Hint: it's not the same kind of flouride that your dentist uses.
