It's not just the banks. The entire financial system has grown piratical. Bankers, insurers, securities traders ... they all are looting the public with exorbitant fees, usurious rates, fraud. In my view, the basic problem is that the system through over-regulation and crony relationship is now an unofficial branch of the state. Financial and government institutions are merely different faces of the establishment, both having evolved into means of preserving a corrupt status quo of privilege and wealth for its elite members.

That problem cannot be solved with more rules made by politicians and bureaucrats who themselves are among the beneficiaries of the system. It will take structural reform leading to the breakup of, among others, the big banks and the destruction of their cozy symbiosis with government. Frankly, as deeply entrenched as we foolishly have allowed this monstrous state to grow, I do not see that happening. Through every congress, every administration, every change of government in every developed nation, every new international agency and program, the problem only becomes bigger. We have a world in which democracy has been subverted to oligarchy with those promising to change it, including our current rulers, only using our gullibility to get power and money for themselves. If anyone has an answer to the question of how reform could succeed now, I would love to hear it.

No!!!!    I don't think that they should be allowed to raise or charge fees.  The reason banks needed bailout money was because they were irresponsible to begin with.  Secondly, it is our money.  It is greed. Maybe, banks, corporations and the government should try what the majority of us do spend our money wisely and budget.  Lindy
