Would the collapse of modern society be good or bad in the long run?
Change is inevitable and the time of modern man will end someday, it's just the natural way of things throughout history. Will it be ultimately good or bad for us as humans?
Its collapsing now. In the long run I think it may/could be good.
Society won't collapse--just the economy if we don't get out of the global empire "business" (businesses typically have a return on investment). Society will only collapse if there is all-out war (Not likely). If the economy collapses, my hope is that we reform into a a decentralized goverment and establish a sort of corporate feudalism on which to re-build a new republic. The worst that can happen is military dictatorship (by another name of course). All of the wealthiest Americans will go somewhere else. Education's already in the toilet and we're technologically behind the rest of the world in terms of our industrial capabilities and medical care. We have nothing to offer the world in terms of trade. The US and the Middle East are the only fanatically religious regions still in existence and I suppose superstition and ignorance will continue to get worse with the common people.
Society will completely collapse, it's just a matter of time. It might be our own doing; war, famine, etc, or it might be natural; a giant earthquake, another ice age, tsunamis, etc. The point is it's going to happen, it's the natural order of things
The economy will inevitably collapse. It is based on a Dark Age misinterpretation of reality; infinite growth is impossible and we cannot all be on top unless we learn to share. It would serve us all to learn about time banks, local currency, gift economies, bartering and to increase our skill sets to include as many abilities as possible that are necessary to our chosen ways of life. Specialization should be abolished.
I would like to see the predominant worldview rewound to pre-colonized, nature based values with our modern accoutrements intact. Indigenous the world over thrived for thousands of years with much less stuff and no money. Ultimately, it is people who maintain infrastructure and make things, if we want them bad enough we can have them. Being mindful of ecology, built in obsolescence would be eliminated and landfills would be mined. Free natural abundance should be restored and shared and we should all break up into small unanimous democracies with adherences to the ethic of reciprocity between tribes. It will most likely be ugly at first, but in the long run I think it will be great.
I agree, but I feel it's a numbers game here, that we, as a species, cannot progress to the state you speak of until our numbers have been greatly reduced, which will happen naturally as we continue to overpopulate and consume the planet.
A good quote I saw yesterday said,-Being rich is not how much we have
got but how little we need.
If people would just turn off the TV, educate their selves and examine the human story, we would be weaning ourselves from the current system in droves. If we could manage this population would stabilize according to the caring capacity of land.
If social revolution, natural disaster or an "act of God" does not stop "modern" society from progressing down the slippery slope of tyranny, we will become a nation where absolute power remains in the hands of a select few and most of our resources will be needed to feed the insatiable appetities of the social elite, in their never ending quest for wealth, power and control.

Is to devise the philosophies in the Victorian era which have led to the sinister use of Eugenics in the 20th and 21st century.I am not proud of that. And I doubt that this is what the great Charles Darwin would have wanted. Those elitist and somewhat disturbing ideologies were, ultimately, the...
