What are the benefits of single sex schools in modern society?

Having been educated in primary and secondary schools ( elementary and high school) of mixed religions and a mix of both sexes, I would love to know what is the benefit of single sex schools.

One of the local school systems where we lived in Arkansas decided to segregate the class by gender at fifth grade. They found that there was a huge increase in concentration, as the children weren't distracted by their hormones.

I'd say less distractions.  My son has this little girl name Lexie that he is absolutely infatuated with.  I think he'll do anything to impress her and he's only 8 years old.  LOL...

Boys will be Boys!! lol I had friends who only ever went to single sex schools and they found it harder to integrate with boys on a social level. Thanks Ellana317

Once upon a time I think single-sex schools might have made sense because the entire social lives of kids was easier to monitor and regulate so that the entire process of co-ed social interaction could be guided.

However, these days regulated socialization outside of school is very difficult. Schools can still provide some degree of guidance regarding socialization. It seems like a mistake to sacrifice that.

Theoretically the benefit is being able to focus on one's studies rather than social pressures and some think that boys and girls learn very differently and/or behave differently in single-sex environments. Boys are more likely to collaborate and girls are more likely to participate, are possible examples.

I kind of like the idea of hybrid models--co-ed schools with some single-sex classrooms. Regardless, no model is likely to be a magic solution. A good co-ed school is going to outperform a poor single-sex school and vice versa. It definitely seems worth exploring, though.

Cheers junkseller, I like your thoughts! A hybrid model would be an interesting concept i would love to see adapted in Ireland. Appreciate your interesting comments!!

Unfortunately, you will still have little brat girls fighting little brat girls. If they could really get a handle on that, it might be a great idea. Thanks for your thoughts.

I am presently teaching in an all-girls school in Thailand.  Prior to teaching in this school, I taught at a co-ed public school.  The primary benefit to me is that in Thailand the girls are much less distracted and able to concentrate more on their studies than they were in the government school.  Discipline is a lot better too in the all-girls school which makes for a much better learning environment.
