   Are there any advantages of hiding the truth?
   
   Is it practical to always speak the truth - no matter what? AT times it may be more harmful ?

   Speaking the truth  not always harmful but if you think telling the truth will  hurt someone then don't mention the truth it all depends on the situation.

   The only case is if your Girlfriend, wife, etc. asks if she is fat. Even if she has put on a few pounds, believe me tell her she looks great.

   It depends on the goal. The scriptures say, every man is a liar. So we can go from there. Everybody lies. Preachers, businessmen, politicians, the government,  the media, teachers, scientist, historians. Everybody tells lies for their own advantages, greed, wealth, protection, love or survival.

   I think its a double sided question. Is there advantages? At times maybe. In cases that it won't really hurt anyone. A simple white lie, that nobody would care or be hurt if the truth came out. Is it harmful? Yes, one lie leads to another. Even if you are doing for a good reason. If you know it will hurt someone, then it will hurt worse when they find out. Even though they might not find out. Many cases they do, then your in a rutt. Sometimes its not about morals. Its about doing the right thing. Taking risk, when either outcome may be bad. In reality, most decision are about morals. What is right and wrong. The biggest thing is knowing the difference. When a lie won't hurt either way, or when a lie will hurt in the end.

   the best way to judge the situation is to judge the INTENT behind the action,... for example, working in long term care i've often encountered moments when the truth would have been counter-productive at best and down right cruel beyond that,... if my 87 yr old thinks that her kids are getting off the buss and she cant go to dinner because she'll miss them at 4pm,.... isnt it better to tell her that they called and said they were staying late at school for a ball game?.... than to tell her that her son died in vietnam and her daughter hasnt been heard from since 1986?..... in the buisness we call this a "theraputic un-truth"

   "Are there any advantages of hiding the truth?" Hmmmmmm, let's think about that.
   Would Obamacare have been passed if the truth about it wasn't hidden?
   Would Obama even have been elected if the media didn't hide the truth about him?
   Would Obama have been re-elected if the truth about Benghazi wasn't hidden?
   Would Holder still be in his position if the truth about Fast and Furious wasn't hidden?
   Would Hil liar y be a candidate for President of the US if the truth about Benghazi wasn't hidden?
   It seems that there are advantages to hiding the truth! And they are all nefarious. In the end the truth will out if it is being hidden for nefarious reasons. If it is hidden to avoid "unnecessary" pain or hurt for a loved one, that can be wrong too but I suppose like beauty each situation must be determined "in the eye of the beholder" however everyone deserves the right to be told the truth, especially when it directly affects them even if the truth is painful. Life is painful, we should always be prepared for the worst and understand that our destiny is ultimately in the hands of a higher power.

   Sometimes it is more ethical to lie. For example, if you're, say, a Navy Seal and the bad guy wants to how you intend to carry out your mission, obviously, you're not going to endanger even more lives by telling him the truth. Likewise, if a woman is in an abusive marriage and her husband wants to know if she's thinking of calling the police, she is certainly not going to say so, and thus endanger her life and her childrens lives--not to mention relatives. Instead, she's going to have to learn to be as sneaky as he is. When it's a matter of life and death for those you love and/or a purpose you are serving, then you will lie like crazy---and probably feel pretty good about it.

      Good points!  The instances you present do have another choice besides lying - not to answer at all. Thankfully these type of situations are not the norm but probably are the best  excuses for lying.
