Have you heard about the "Mandela effect"?
Have you had any experiences with it and what are your thoughts on it? What causes mass misremembrance of facts like this? Confusion between similar items/ideas/occurrences? Do you think it's interesting? total BS? evidence of parallel universes? Share your ideas or speculations on it - I'm very curious .
I tend to think there's not much to it as memory is quite fallible and especially when it comes to mismembering spellings (Berenstain Bears, Froot Loops, etc.) I think it can be easily explained (you remember what makes the most sense to you at the time).
However, I have experienced it and it is definitely a strange phenomenon! I clearly remember Mr. Rogers dying in the last five years or so, I specifically remember reading Facebook/Twitter posts about. Except he died in 2003 before I would've experienced reading anything on social media about it. I looked it up and lots of people seem to remember the same thing. Very weird!
I would suggest that most of memory is based on the labels of what we really remember and that which we think we remember. That old show Monk had a great theme once that Monk was remembering when he was born. And the notion required that he put words to the event. So of course Monk was born speaking and literate.
All four of my children have gone and followed the labeling given to them by society about what is real or not. They actually all said that cartoons are not real. A Christmas tree that is not natural and an organic thing is a "fake" Christmas tree. Well I can tell you that the cartoon is real, otherwise we could not group watch it. The plastic reusable Christmas tree is not a fake tree it just is not organic. But if I did not point out these truths my children would believe that cartoons do not really exist?
Keeping in mind that while I write each word in this sentence, that the first letter is already in the past - history. Alright then we go to an episode of Criminal Minds. That is real. Well yes the story line, the words spoken, the staging and the actors are quite real. So is what happens in them real?
Why is orange really gray to a colorblind man? Remember the pop psyche concept really popular in the '80's, called repressed memory?
Wars are real interesting along these lines. The general says we won the war. The vet that lost 4 buddies and a leg says we lost the war. Which one is right.
Gouda cheese is in fact yummy?
Look at the big media news. Opinions masquerading as fact with film to match it and an expert to back it up. Fun how we have this totally incorrect label that we put on it "Fake" news. Well the news is real it is not fake, but it could be wrong.
Being youngest of 6 kids my version of what happened from my perspective was never accurate. The group of my elder siblings got to decide what is true.
I think that paints the picture -- sorry I went too long
I know its quite late but for the past few weeks I sort of became obsessed with the whole Mandela effect phenomenon. I've heard the term before but only recently that I've given it much thought. When I was in high school we were asked to write a paper on Nelson Mandela. That was year 2008. Honestly I didn't know who that was at the time but since it;s been thrown a lot in class I had to research online and it was the time when the internet and social media were still new. I CLEARLY remember learning that he died and that he's some sort of hero in South Africa. That's all, I cant remember the date.
I'm also quite an artist, and growing up watching Pokemon I used to draw Pikachu a couple of times with a black tip on his tail because that's what he looked like on the show, on merch and everyone I know knows that. When I found out about this whole Pikachu-Mandela effect only did I realize that that was not the case.
Lastly, the Thinking Man sculpture used to have his head bowed a little lower with his hand on his chin in a natural way when were in deep thought. I even remember thinking to myself that it looked like grieving to me. Now his hands are in odd position on it's chin, palms a little open which is no way how you would put your hand on your chin like that when thinking.

Who's experiencing the Mandela effect?

I have. I was ill one evening, having a colitis attact, and my blood pressure plummeted. I literally died for a few seconds, although it seemed longer than a few seconds to me. I literally, or my soul perhaps, was outside my body watching myself and at the same time I saw the...

November 22, 1963 (and the ensuing days) was a time that's imprinted in the minds and hearts of Americans who lived through it. What's you most vivid recollection of that weekend 50 years ago?
