In the interview with Costa, McCain rightfully points out that Powell was responsible for giving the infamous speech about Iraq's mystical WMDs in front of the U.N. that ended up not being true.
However, the irony of this charge is that McCain ends up indicating himself on two fronts.
The first is with the fact that McCain supported the Iraq war. He voted for it, and wrote an op-ed supporting it. No revisionist history can change this fact. If it's a mark against Powell that he initially supported the war, it is necessarily a mark on McCain also.
Second, Powell admitted he was wrong. McCain has done no such thing. In fact, one of his arguments against Obama in 2008 was the timeline in Iraq. Yet, if the war was based on a lie and was a mistake, why would McCain be willing to continue it?
Conservatives may try to avoid this by saying well, "OBAMA DOES TOO!" My answer to this charge: you are right. Obama should have pulled out of Iraq AND Afghanistan immediately upon taking office. But, McCain's hypocrisy is not magically erased by Obama's.
