If you want happiness for an hour: take a nap. If you want happiness for a day: go fishing. If you want happiness for a year: inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime: help someone else.—Chinese Proverb

Welcome to 2015.  We all have compassion for others and may have overcome some situations that would allow us to inspire and help others.   When you give to others you enrich your life as well.  Volunteering to help others benefits those who can learn or be inspired by your story.  Volunteering also makes others aware they are not alone and people do "see" (care about) them.

Your life journey is not just for you. Let me say that again, your life journey is not just for you.  The world benefits from so many people who have taken their journey, continue to overcome and learn from their experiences/tragedies in life, and then play it forward by sharing their story with the world.
    Oprah
    Dr. Phil
    Tony Robbins
    Maya Angelou
    Nicholas James Vujicic
    Viola Davis

There are positive benefits to volunteering, here are a few.
    1. You are helping others to have a better life.
    2. You are surrounded by caring people that are passionate about helping others. A great opportunity to find good friends and increase your social network.
    3. Helping others helps to combat depression.  It's the opportunity to "get out of yourself" and tune into others who need help.  You begin to become more aware of the issues/pains of others rather than just focusing on your own problems.
    4. You achieve a deeper appreciation for life and feel great. Instead of sitting around watching television, thinking of yourself, you actually did something good to benefit others. What a rush of happiness you will experience!

With that said. What organizations or efforts will you make to help others this year?
If you are not sure where you can be of most good, think of what warms your heart! Think of what situations you have overcome: hunger, homelessness, violence, passion for children, passion for the elderly.
