Why do actresses (oh so politically correctly) ...

Why are actresses who, oh so politically correctly, call themselves actors (emphasizing the second syllable) allowed to be considered in the Academy Awards actress category?  Shouldn't they then have to compete with the big boys in the REAL actor category?  (Hee, hee.)

"Actor" is the gender-neutral form of the word, and is the result of the history of theater wherein females were once not allowed to participate at all, so the only "actors" were men,  But the word is not male, per se.  Calling someone an "actress" isn't any more or less politically correct.
