Why should petroleum be the hydrocarbon of choice for our energy needs?
It's cheap, plentiful, and we have an amazing infrastructure in place to harvest it, refine it, deliver it, and consume it. It's available all over the world. It produces less energy than it costs to produce.
Unfortunately, our cars and trucks almost exclusively run on it. It's important to develop natural gas and clean coal as well. Any American hydrocarbon is worth developing as well as green energy.
