Why do people become so angry over differences in beliefs/opinions ?

Religion, sports, science or politics; what do we expect to gain by being combatant?

Fear. People fear things they don't know or understand. Often this ignorance leads to anger and hate. It is so sad. I try very hard not to fall prey to this failing. Yet when I find myself on opposing sides from someone, I often encounter the very thing I try to avoid in people's attitudes and behaviors. The lack of reason, of civility is something that humanity needs to master if we are to move beyond bludgeoning one another to death with weapons and words. A basic respect of people as being people and not things. Vilification, demonizing and dehumanization are three awful awful things.

I honestly do not know. I just think it is how people feel.

People often like to impress their will upon others, so when others hold a different view they feel threatened. It makes them question if that they believe is correct and it's easier for many people to go on the attack rather than to be self critical.
