The term "Moro" came from the word Mauri or Moor refering to the arab, northern african Muslims who invaded Spain in the 8th century BC. These arab muslims defeated the Spanish king Roderick, a christian and ruled Spain for almost 700 years. In the Philippines, Spaniards used the derogatory term moro in reference to the barbaric muslim warlords and warriors in Mindanao. These notorious Muslim head-hunters of Sulu Sultanate or other ethnic muslim tribes defended their territory well against the Spanish invasion.
