Is it the government's responsibility to advertise on how to qualify for food stamps?
With nearly 1 in 7 U.S. citizens on food stamps, should the government be spending up to $ 3 million advertising ob how people can qualify for this program? If a person is poor and hungry, isn't it their responsibility to seek out qualifications for social assistance programs?
I think if the government has a policy, then that policy is there to serve a purpose. I think they have a duty to inform people of what they are entitled to.
Believe me, I am not saying I am against food stamps. There is an obvious need in this down economy and with people earning less and less. I just think those in need have a personal responsibility to look for help without advertising for it.
I agree with pagevoice to a certain extent...sometimes people do not know where to begin looking for help. You have to know which Dept.,which agency. A simple website that points people in the right direction, and an ad in the phone book would help.
I agree with you. In the past when I needed assistance I went and sought it out as it was my responsibility to figure out how to feed my family at that time. Yes we need public assistance, but only to the extent that the public is willing and able to show some accountability for themselves. I am also of the belief that we should do more to encourage living wages and to get people off of assistance.

We've been having a really great discussion on tax rates today, and I've been noticing an underlying theme throughout the thread, so I'll just ask the "tough question" directly. This question has three parts:A) Should the wealthy have to pay a larger percentage in taxes in order to...

Welfare has been a whipping boy for so long. There is a lot wrong with welfare. I have been among those who use the phrase "Welfare Attitude" referring to those who think someone, anyone particularly the government owes them a free ride. That being said there is a lot right with welfare...
