How will America manage a national power outage?
What will America's response be in this time of crisis? With the unfortunate power outage happening now in India this problem troubles me. Having a multitude of aging grids and a unwillingness to put money into infrastructure can we retain stability if this catastrophe became permanent?
We're willing to invest whatever it takes to keep infrastructure sound. The trouble is that government's regulation and flaky but influential special interests are blocking it. Get them out of the way, and the problem will be resolved.
I believe it would depend on what part of the country they are in that dictates how they would fare through a national power outage. Living in tornado alley, we have been without power for extended periods of time, repeatedly, and we have done fine. Those living in the cities would have a more difficult time functioning as they do not have the items available on hand to cope. Those of us in Mid-America, or Western America need only break out the camping equipment to survive. A BBQ grill to cook on, sleeping bags, Coleman lanterns and coolers and we are set for weeks! The lack of availability of these items in the major cities would lead to mass hysteria. Americans pull together to make things happen, so they could do this too!
