Is it incorrect to say "Bible" when stating Bible passages?
President Obama references "scripture" regarding Connecticut massacre. Was he afraid people would get offended if he said "Bible?"
Maybe he just wasn't paying attention. He might just say it that way all the time!
I've heard people say "scripture", "the word", "the good book" and bible...etc I would not read anything into the president's speech. For all we know that is how he refers to the bible all the time. I highly doubt he was trying to be "politically correct" at a time like this. Having said that I don't think I've heard (any) president ever specifically mention the word (bible).
The way this list of what you can and can not say expands around the world soon it will be offensive to say anything to anyone because it causes offence. Why on earth would the term bible offend. It's been a freely used word for many years. The word bible appears millions of times on the internet and is used thousands of times daily. Next it will be offensive to say Jesus. In fact in some strange quarters it already is.
I noticed that the commentater said at the end of addresses like this, the president says, "God bless America ......." He didn't say it this time. I wonder if there was a reason the commentator mentioned it.
Bible originally means simply book, and even now we say The Bible although the word is rarely used in another context in English today. The Bible of course contains the old testament venerated by Judaism and Islam. In Islam Jews and Christians are protected from harm under Islamic law and referred to as the people of the book. This presumably means that people whose spiritual philosophy is founded on the Mosaic law share some protection under that law . When the commandment, Thou shalt not kill, has been so evilly breached, the President was at pains to be inclusive. As we share the sorrow of this inexplicable tragedy our president summoned empathy and set aside sectarian dogma. We should emulate him. It is the right thing to do.
Organized you know I was wondering too if he was trying to be inclusive. I wondered if he knew something about the beliefs of the families. After 911 there were complaints by atheists about the prayer vigil at the White House.
I think in this case President Obama was trying his best to ease the pain for those who were suffering a great loss. It does not matter if he said scripture or bible, he did his best to make his point. For any Leader, it's always hard to find just the right words at a time like this no matter who you are.
He was clearly shaken. I'm sure he is always concerned about his own kids because of his job.
He used the word scripture to be on the fence. People need to get it through their minds and out of prejudice that our current sitting president does not believe in the Scriptures of the one true Holy God. He is muslim and sugar coats using the word scripture instead of Bible because he thinks he can appeal to "all" people by neutrality. He believes the way of the q'aran.
I live in the Chicago area. I can't believe people still think the president is a Muslim! During the 2008 election he was attacked for being a (20 year) member of Jeremiah Wright's church: Trinity United Church of Christ. That is NOT a Muslim mosque!
Ask Jeremiah Wright about the relationship of the two of them. He himself has said it was one of complications and denies even wanting to say he attended his church. He has said the current president used him to advance himself in the political arena

How do we know if we understand the correct context when we study the Holy Bible?I have often wonder why we sometimes if not often misunderstand the context of chapters and/or verses when we study God's word. What do you think about the law recently passed by the supreme court, in Indiana which recently went into effect, stating the police can enter your home illegally, and you can not resist. They further state, you can later hire a lawyer to sue them (of course it will be at your expense)Is this not a...

People, please stop using the question section to post. I hate leaving comments on questions because people take advantage of the one response rule to take a shot at the previous comments. This forum is inspired by a recent comment I left on a question, "How do Christians know the Bible is the...
