What are the main similarities and differences in liberal and libertarian ideologies?
the main similarity is a belief in personal liberty - what I do is none of your business until if effects you.
the main difference is the social safety net - liberals are for it; libertarians are against it.
Etymologically, there is no difference between the two. A Libertarians are nothing more than liberals who have developed enough of an organized doctrine that they have a sort of proto-political party organization.
