   Has anyone ever personally known of a truly honest and ethical politician?
   
   Just curious, has anyone ever personally known of a truly honest and ethical politician, or candidate who ran for political office, and then once elected, remained honest and ethical throughout his or her term of office?  I do not want any names, as this is not a platform to campaign for anyone, etc., just maybe a number ... zero, one ... five, whatever the case may be.  Thank you for answering.

   Good Morning Dear Faith,
   I always thought the term ' Honest Politician ' was an oxymoron, a bit like ' Mournful Optimist ', and such like, or similarly, putting Count Dracula in charge of a blood bank. One certainly shouldn't ' Muzzle the ox whilst he's treading out the grain ', so to speak, but from a lot of the news stories in the press, day in, day out, it seems many politicians are still found wanting, who never seem to take a pay cut when their constituents are struggling during this present, economic climate, although there must be a few good men/women out there. Until further notice, I'll have to say it's a big fat resounding zero to your question.

      Hi Dear Romeos,  yes, I thought that very thing ... oxymoron!  I know there are some good men and women out there, but it seems if they are in it for too long, then it seems to have an effect even on those with the best of intentions, sadly.

   I've known of a few who went in honest but I can only think of 1 who stayed that way. I didn't know any of them personally.
   The biggest problem is the overall corruption of the system and how legislation is passed as well as the mechanics of legislative bills.
   A politician who tries to stay honest and true to their word will find themselves "locked in a closet" and ineffectual. Again due to the corruption of the system.

      Hello Borsia,  thank you for answering.  You have made such a valid point as to exactly what happens, which is a sad state of affairs, indeed.  Yes, corruption, greed and the evil in the hearts of men seem to prevail over time.

   I've known several going in.  Once in office, I've only known two and they were at the state level.  Covering government for a newspaper, my observation was that many start out with the highest of ethics but the experience milks it out of them.

      Hi Kathleen,  thank you for sharing.  Yes, unfortunately, it seems once exposed and they become a part of such atmosphere, over time, it seems it erodes the ethics away.
