Why canʻt people on food stamps use them to buy hot food?
Food stamps can?t be used to buy hot, cooked food. They can only be used to buy fresh fruits & veggies, canned foods, meats, frozen food, snack foods, and non-alcoholic drinks. Many homeless people don?t have cooking facilities.
Since they have to use "blanket solutions" for everything, I'm assuming that's the attempt to keep people from eating at restaurants and such with food stamps. It does, unfortunately, cause a problem for people who are homeless, have the gas or electricity shut off, or otherwise can't cook food. I guess they figure that that problem isn't as great as people gaming the system in order to eat out for free? I've wondered that myself. I've also wondered at the people who say that "only healthy food" should be allowed while on food stamps -- but what kind of blanket policy could cover that? Everyone has different dietary and health needs. I live in a community that has a nearly 40% poverty rate, so thankfully we do have volunteers who will let people come cook food on their stoves or in their microwaves if they have no other means, but I know there are thousands who just have to eat pre-cooked, packaged foods cold because it's the only option.
Because hot food has a huge mark up and they want you to get as much for your food stamp allowance as possible.
