Why do people feed the fear of society's reaction to our actions?

We see the effects that hate and bullying has on people everyday. We are faced with tragedies like Columbine, because two kids were not accepted by society. People commit suicide daily, yet we still single people out if they are different.

People are scared to express their ideas, crazy or sane, because they are scared of what society's reaction will be. What kinda of world are we living in where people are so close minded and prejudice that we are trapping ideas in peoples minds. Think about all the ideas we are missing out on.

What will it take for people to accept different?

This is part of our origins we still have herd mentality.
They did tests if you fall in a busy high street it takes longer for someone to help than if you fall on the same sparsely populated high street.
Herd mentality makes a group of people do things no one in the group would do if alone.
People are right to fear society imho the more people the more trouble.
