Definitely not. If every politician was a dedicated person the world would have been a better place
There's an article in today's 'i' newspaper (a separate edition that condenses the Independent's content): 'Nice work if you can get elected for it' by Ian Birrell of the Independent. In it he says 'MP's (members of Parliament) can spend an astonishing 223 days away from Westminster'. There's as much graft in the 'mother of parliaments' as there is in any 'Banana republic'. MP's at Westminster are largely immune from prosecution and can only be dealt with by the courts if Westminster allows the Crown Prosecution Service access to that [group of] MP's papers.
The author Lord Jeffrey Archer, who was also Chairman of the Conservative Party at the time of Mrs Thatcher's government, was found guilty of perjury in a sensitive case and imprisoned (albeit an open prison, as he wasn't considered a 'hard case'). When released he retained his title against all expectations.
MP's also have more time off 'work' than teachers, who have on average twelve weeks' holiday in a year, eight more than most in industry or business. When I worked in Fleet Street my annual leave entitlement was six weeks, at Royal Mail it was four and a half weeks until the fifteenth year of service. Then it would be five and a half weeks.
Nice work if the voters see something in you, but they might not see a lot of you.
