Would you support an Amendment to totally replace federal income tax with a national sales tax?
Please be specific and detail the reasons for your choice.
National Sales Tax as I define it, is a tax similar to the existing State Sales Tax.
It has all the same objections and benefits as those state taxes.
The 1% are taxed at hi marginal rates, but this is totally offset by the advantages that they get from the Internal Revenue Code. The Middle Class can't effectively use the IRC because they are mostly wage earners.
I think a 10 to 12% NST wb sufficient as it won't include FICA. The IRS could be severely downsized. Income Tax has privacy, and constitutional infringement issues,
It depends on exactly what is taxable. Food? No, because that puts undo burden on the people who can least afford it already.
Homes, cars, clothing, services? Sure. It has the benefit of making money obtained through illegal means taxable. Want to buy a Benz with your drug money? Pay the sales tax. However, it may also cause those with the most means to make their purchases in other countries.
Does sales tax eliminate wholesale, non-taxable purchases for businesses? If not, where does business get taxed? Since corporations are now people, how do they pay their fair share?
I think it's at least worth a discussion, as a more equitable way to tax people. I don't think the current method is particularly fair, or working as well as it could.
