How does the issue of looks put inordinate pressure on, even damages the self-esteem & self-image
of girls & women?
Modern media is constantly bombarding us with messages regarding the importance of physical attraction and beauty and this is most prevalent in ads aimed at girls and women - they're almost always about makeup, anti-aging, skin clearing, weight loss, fashion trends, etc. And it's always some new and improved version that you absolutely must have or else....
What these messages are really saying is that we're not good enough as we are. We're not worthy of being desired or loved as we are. We're being programmed from an early age to compare ourselves to unrealistic standards and always, naturally, find ourselves lacking. This is an extremely toxic and damaging system for women and girls who can't fit the "perfect" mold no matter how hard they'd try and leads to low self-esteem, insecurity, and self-loathing.
