The year was 1960 and I was the tender age of 14. My family had gone to the beach for the day. I couldn't swim but I loved going in the water and walking out beyond where the waves broke. I had recently started wearing glasses for nearsightedness but, of course, couldn't wear them in the ocean so there I was, out beyond the breakers, all by myself, not knowing how to swim, and now not being able to see clearly. Everything was really calm and I was getting ready to go in when I turned to see what might be headed my way. When I looked, all I saw was a gigantic wall of water coming toward me. I turned and tried desperately to outrun it to the shore. I didn't make it. The wave crashed down on me, throwing me to the bottom pushing me along the sand. I struggled to get up when another one crashed down on me, pushed me to the bottom and just as I was about to be pushed along the sand again someone pulled me up and out of the water. Sadly, my bathing suit stayed in the water.
