Why do we have to respect the Flag to be Patriots?
Our flag is merely a piece of cloth. Some though, seem to endow it with certain patriotic powers, as if it held the country together with its stars and stripes. Few however, ever stop to think of the atrocities enacted beneath its folds in the name of freedom.
Tens of thousands, if not more, Native Americans were starved and subjected to diseases under the noble flag. The bison herds were made almost extinct in the effort to cut off their food source. The Cherokee lands and homes were stolen from them in Georgia. Most of the slaves were brought here on ships flying the US flag. Just sayin'.
Randy this is false "Our flag is merely a piece of cloth." if it were true why when protesting just put up a white piece of cloth and burn it. Why Ira Hayes and Iwa Jima flag raising. Why was the author moved by the fact that "the flag was still there"? You can say alot about this issue but if you start out discounting a flag's importance the rest of the argument is faulty. I wonder why a flag was placed on the moon? I wonder why coffins of soldiers are flag draped. On the fourth of July shouldn't people just put up green bed sheet? I wonder why US soldiers fighting in a UN peace keeping mission where a flag on their shoulder.
I wonder why when I had some problems in Mexico DF that I was so relieved when I saw the flag above the embassy.
Historical issues are a separate issue unless you want to "Protest" them. Is it even a protest if you now protest against something that happened 200 years ago. I mean, are you protesting me? Are you protesting Trump because Jefferson owned slaves? Are you protesting Custer? I suppose we could "protest" Hitler and Stalin.
For sure Randy 200 year old historical issues just are not logically a reason to protest today and hate the flag, which you would not ever do if it were just a piece of cloth.
There is another issue that is real blatant. The Cherokee had slaves long before Europeans hit the shores. And they had them up to the time of the wars with the whites. The Comanche group of tribes would totally annihilate other tribes taking only slaves and women. Shouldn't we "protest" them.
Nope you do not have to respect the flag to be a Patriot but you do have to to be patriotic. I suppose a strange difference but true.
Actually, a "FLAG" is insignificant in the "Grand Picture" ~ What is SIGNIFICANT? NFL Athletes, OWNERs & Fans taking a KNEE 2 "SHINE a Light" on Atrocious In-Justices EXACERBATED by a HORRIFICALLY Unstable & UNFIT Russian POODLE Pseudo-Pres

You are right AP. Your point supports my belief.
What reason did Kapernick give for doing it? Hint; his lady put him up to it and he was out of the limelight which he craved.
Not sure how my comment supports your belief, but we all know that an AUDIENCE is needed 2 Foster Change & C. Kaepernick's "CAUSE" is 2 STOP NAZIs, & the KKK. within FORCEs, from exercising an ARBITRARY Violence ~ Trump "SIDEs" with NAZIs
It's really scary that Trump is the president of the most powerful country in the world. His distorted sense of patriotism is akin to Hitler's nationalism. A flag is a flag, its leader can enact good or evil. Trump, well...
