Maybe that's not such a good idea. Imagine if a teacher missed their target and it another student.

Imagine if the teacher was unarmed and a killer has nothing in his way - can simply stand there and shoot without interference.

But I would imagine that a teacher isn't going to be firing blind, at a target that is not in view.  Those cops obviously were doing just that.

I actually had a teacher who had a mental breakdown and had to be removed from her job.

Imagine if she had a gun.

Now there is a frightening thought: a teacher with mental illness STILL TEACHING!

If we can't observe that a person in a highly public job, interacting with dozens of people every day, is mentally ill and remove that person prior to a "breakdown", how can we ever expect to insure no one leading private, seclusive lives will do the same and use their legal, registered gun to kill with?

Hey Promisem, I had the same situation, except this "teacher" was a colleague of mine. He flipped out during an IEP meeting (for students with special needs) and that turned out to be the final straw for all of us.  During that year he managed to alienate everybody on campus with his bombastic behavior (for example, he accused everybody of spying on him and being part of some distorted cabal to ruin his life ). There was a rumor that he was packing heat, but luckily that never came to fruition. The last time I saw him he was escorted off campus by police officers. Basically, for all of us on campus it was a " Bye Felicia" moment.
