I'm not aware that I negotiate my self identity in different social contexts. Instead, I believe I express identity traits via words and actions that are relevant to the context.

For example, I use diplomacy and negotiation at work and in volunteer organizations to communicate with others, find consensus, manage relationships and minimize conflict.

But I don't need diplomacy and negotiation skills at the grocery store.

Then again, maybe I'm misunderstanding what you want for an answer.  smile

In different social contexts, I usually negotiate my self-identity by engaging myself to actively interact with one another or to individual performing within a particular social context to convey aspects of my identity. This negotiation often occurs with little conscious thought; I am comfortably interacts with one another, revealing what is appropriate while assessing what information is being given. Interacting and communicating with others is the way I form my views and particular ways of thinking about both others and myself in different situations. I go with the goal of effective intercultural communication which is to create shared meanings between dissimilar individuals in an interactive situation. In addition to creating shared content meanings between two cultural communicators, we need to be mindful of the identity and relational meanings that are being expressed in an intercultural situation. This implies different communication styles, and understanding such cultural values is important to start understanding our behaviors towards identity.

You do not change or negotiate your self Identity in any group , ever .   I believe that there are many forces in our midst that try to reform others self identity in public schools and similar collegiate  classes .   Most people have formed one by their teenage years ,  it is however WHY schools are doing this , younger people's identities are more fluid than older peoples.

If you feel you have self identity , hold onto it like gold .

I'm like Popeye. I am what I am and that's all that I am, pretty much all the time and everywhere.
