Florida relaxed some stay-at-home restrictions and Floridians swarmed the beaches.

What do you think: smart or stupid?

And what do you think about the different ways different governors are pushing their stay-at-home orders? Is it too much? Or is it too little?

The President has been encouraging pushing back against what he sees as draconian stay-at-home orders in Michigan and Minnesota, among other states. Some protestors have been pushing hard to be allowed to go back to work.

And if you were unemployed, what would you do?

Overall, it looked like beach goers were not in large, close contact groups but maintaining some distance.  For the most part.  Assuming they are in an area rather quiet virus-wise, doesn't look too bad to me.  I probably wouldn't participate though.

I'm not sure that governors have the legal right to enforce their orders the way some are doing it.  I think their actions are very questionable from a legal and constitutional standpoint.

Were I unemployed, drawing more in unemployment that I was while working I would definitely stay at home as long as possible.  Most families will be drawing at least an average income; that should suffice until things improve.

What pictures did you see? I'd actually be interested how the pictures in different publications portrayed the situation. I just saw one on CNN and it made it look like people were pretty close together and nobody was wearing masks.

Assuming you could successfully collect unemployment, I agree. However, I've also seen reports that getting ahold of the unemployment office in NY is basically impossible. I was trying to be a bit more empathetic to the unemployed than I usually am since I'm able to work from home. If I wasn't able to work from home and was having trouble collecting unemployment, I think I'd be pretty anxious to go back to work and more likely to oppose strict stay-at-home orders.

I also agree with Randy. I fear from those in Florida that their state government is doing them a huge disservice and the number of cases will spike and it will be too late to do anything about it. Got to feel for the health care workers in Florida too. Doesn't look like they will be getting a break any time in the near future.

Don't get me wrong - unemployment or not, if I couldn't make the mortgage next month I'd be looking for work and taking whatever was possible.  Bouncer in an underground bar if I had to.

We'll see about the beaches and Florida.  It doesn't seem like Florida has done a very good job anyway; this might be the straw that breaks the back.  It's a risk, for sure.

Wilderness, you might appreciate the humor in a CNN video I watched. The headline was something about how the beaches were being swarmed and the video showed two guys with bikes running onto the beach. Just the two guys. Typical CNN. I guess if two guys is a swarm, those beaches were swarmed.

To be fair, I saw some still images that seemed more concerning.

Mind-numbingly stupid. The rest of the world is, as per usual, looking on and wondering what the hell you guys are doing.

We'll see the results of this in a few weeks, either good or bad. Guinea pigs need to bask in the sun occasionally. yikes

I actually couldn't tell if they were social distancing or not. One man said that it didn't seem to him like the people were keeping their distance. My brother in NM says he's staying "one alligator" apart when he goes out for exercise. I didn't ask him if its a big old alligator or a young one, but I guess we'll all find out if the distance works. But I agree that we'll see if the guinea pigs in Florida are staying safe. I can't tell by the videos. Some of the closeness could be among family members. But it's no more distance than I encounter when I go to buy groceries, and the employees haven't been wearing masks. I think they should. If I mask and glove for them, I think they should do it for the shoppers.

Will these canaries  continue their nonchalance all the way to their death bed?

I mean, if you are saying that you will not take precautions against COVID as if it gets you, and you get very ill, then that it is what it is, then don't take someone else's hospital bed, don't take someone else's ventilator. Die at home as you've made your decision and should stick to it. Save the ventilators and ICUs for those who at least tried to avoid the virus.

That's the problem right now, right? People wanting to risk getting sick for various activities. It's fine if you want to risk your life, but it's when you put others' lives at risk that things become sticky.

That's what's so hard about this. It's not about individual freedom as much as it is protecting those who will be put at risk if individual freedom trumps the safety of society as a whole.

Sure is the problem... you summed it up very well. I think some people don't have the capacity to understand this and others just don't give a damn as it gives them an excuse to act as though they are some sort of freedom fighters...an ego boost for child-like adults I guess.

Even though GA gov. Kep is opening up the state Friday, I'm going to stay away from people for at least two weeks, or until the numbers get a little better. Or until the guinea pigs indicate it's safe to venture out.
