The Confederate States of America: Nation or independent states?

Seven states initially seceeded from the union of states known as the United States of America. Those states were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. After Lincoln's election, four more states followed. They were Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia (with the exception of 50 Virginian counties that became West Virginia). Eleven States formed the new nation known as the Confederate States of America. This foreign entity was never formally recognized by the United States Government as a legitimate nation. But they had seceded from the Union and were at the very least, separate and independent states. My question is this. Why should citizens of the United States of America be expected to accept stutues, memorials, and names of institutions dedicated to military and political leaders of foreign states or even a foreign country? I ask this question fully expecting to be educated on the matter. I'll be learning as I go. This is simply my initial response as I begin dealing with the issue as it has risen to its current level.

I'm inclined to say that only you could ask this, bro. But no, it is a very valid question and I cherish you more for asking it, as it stimulates thought.

It may be that statues to these people are not necessary, but we need something to celebrate and so we create them. The great Seer Vivekananda used to say, that if there was no God with form, we would create one.

Don't you see what we do with football, music and the pop culture? Whether its a Lionel Messi or David Beckham; a Michael or 'Magic' Johnson or Elvis Presley, a Rihanna or Lady Garga. Of course there are more serious folks like Martin Luther King jnr, or Abe Lincoln. It is just a natural human thing to create idols, as old as the Old Testament itself.

The question is why? Because everything we do, is another step on the ladder for meaning. Don't ask me about politics, but ask me about man. We are searching, seeking and will create whatever we feel adds an identity to our quest for inner meaning.

Your question is valid though, as we sometimes worship those whose history have been very questionable. We tend to see this, only as we evolve though. So evolution is the key. Om Shanti!
