Do you believe that the IRS should be done away with?  Instead of being burdened with federal taxes, there should be a sales tax each time one shops.  Do you agree or disagree?

I am a middle-of-the-roader, but I can't agree with a sales tax to support our government because it puts a bigger burden on the little guy. Places that have no income taxes usually raise their sales taxes higher anyway. Today where I live, by the time a person pays all the municipal, county, state and federal taxes on most items, the tax amounts to 10%. Groceries are an exception, but clothing, furniture and autos are not. Ten percent of a retail sale takes a bigger bite out of a little paycheck than it does the salary of a person who makes big bucks. Let me give you an example, I live in a metropolitan area where there are 4 or 5 cities crowded together. One doesn't know where one ends and another begins if they miss the city limits sign. I discovered that the taxes on a big ticket item like a suite of furniture or a car cost more in a certain large shopping area north of the river than it does south of the river. I buy my automobiles at dealerships south of the river because the tax is 1% less. Figure 1% on a $30,000 auto and see what you get.
I think a lot of people would do without necessities if they had to pay high sales taxes on them. Income taxes are at least deducted weekly, biweekly or monthly from salaries, which doesn't hurt as much, as strange as that seems. Of course the upside to that scenario is that our society might become less disposable. Then that might just hurt business, so in the long run, that would hurt the government.

I agree.  I've been trying to buy a $50,000 car, out of state because it is not available where I live.  California dealers have them...but at an increased sales tax cost of an additional 3%.  $1500 more if I buy in California!  No thanks - dealerships in California will not get my business.

Of course, huge state/local taxes on such things as rental cars and motel rooms also gripe me - states should be taxing their own residents for what they want to buy, not the traveler supporting businesses in that state and bringing money in to do it with.
